Nine things I’ve learned from working on my business this week:

1. I know some things that other people don’t. Like how to use Skype, or what a lead magnet is. This has given me more confidence that I know enough to be able to put my knowledge into products that help people.

2. That creating content every day, for me, at the moment, is tough and time consuming. I’ve been using the content batching method recently and have found it takes me ages. Maybe it will get quicker with practice. I’ve scheduled some content stacking into my content plan to see if it saves me time.

3. There are people who know the same as me, maybe more in some subjects, maybe less in others, who are out there building businesses, getting speaking gigs, earning money. I want some of that and the only thing that is stopping me from getting that is me, so I’m going to get out of my own way and get on with it.

4. Seth Godin’s book, This is Marketing, can help you look at marketing in a different light. It’s not a ‘how to’ but read it and you’ll be enthused to approach your marketing in a different way.

5. That you can’t add a free version of a Wix website to Google my Business, so now I’ve got a whole other job of populating the website that Google has assigned me. I’m using a free website while I get my shit together. It gives me the opportunity to play around with a website, so that when I’m ready to invest I’m absolutely clear about what I want.

6. My ideal client won’t mind me using the phrase ‘get my shit together’.

7. Finding a coach / mentor and being in a membership group that really works for me (the flip side of ideal client is ideal supplier) is saving me heaps of time, as I’m now not trawling through endless Facebook ads, downloading umpteen freebies, or searching Google and You Tube for “How to’s”. The training I have received in the last month has paid back in hours I can spend working on my business, because if I want to know something I now know exactly where to look.

8. However much you know, there is always more to learn. I have a marketing qualification, I’ve worked in the business for 20+ years, and yet I still have lots to learn about marketing for local, solo and small businesses using today’s technology and methods. That doesn’t mean the old principles don’t hold true. I still believe in the 7P’s if you’re marketing a service, but now you need to add in the 4 Cs as well.

9. There are never enough hours in a day, and there never will be. You just need to prioritise.
